New films are released every week. There’s always something new to watch in movie theaters and cinemas, and if you can’t get to the movies, there are streaming services there to provide for us. Thanks to the huge amount of money that companies like Netflix and Amazon Prime are able to invest in their own productions, cinema-quality films are released for home viewing without the need to pay for an expensive ticket or be disturbed by someone kicking the back of your chair for ninety minutes. We truly live in a golden age of entertainment!
Not all movies are created as equals, though. There are some that stand out head and shoulders above the rest of the crowd, and they’re anticipated for weeks or even months ahead of their release. There are several movies of that kind in the pipeline right now, and we’re already growing impatient waiting for them to be released so we can sit back and enjoy them for ourselves. Without further ado, here are five movies due out this year that promise to be red-hot and will live on in our memories long after the year is over!
No Time To Die
Every James Bond movie is a major movie event. They’re released years apart to ensure that audiences don’t become bored or over-saturated by them, and so by the time we get to see Bond on our screens again, it’s like becoming reacquainted with an old friend who’s been away for a while. It just so happens that this particular old friend is one of the toughest guys in the world, and always has an explosive story to share with you.
This particular Bond movie is special for two reasons. Firstly it’s the 25th film in the series, which is a fact worth celebrating, and it will be the very last to star Daniel Craig as he steps down from the role after fifteen successful years. The tale of an older Bond fighting against the dying of the light promises to be a compelling one, and by the time it arrives in November, we’ll be chomping at the bit for it.
Tomb Raider 2
There’s already been a movie called ‘Tomb Raider 2,’ but that was many years ago and belonged to a whole different universe than this one. The Lara Croft ‘Tomb Raider’ movies were frothy and camp, but the new incarnation played by Alicia Vikander is grittier, more realistic, and more dramatic. There may be fewer eye-catching explosions and fight scenes, but there’s more sophisticated storytelling.
No other video game character has crossed over into movies as well as Lara Croft has. In truth, the character still belongs to the world of digital entertainment now – the ‘Lara Croft: Temples and Tombs’ online slots game has been a huge hit at casinos, and kept the ‘Tomb Raider’ torch burning in the gap between films and online slots. It wasn’t even the first online slots game to bear the ‘Tomb Raider’ name – there have been two others made in years past, and they were equally well received. Whether it’s in video games, online slots, or action films, Lara Croft is a bonafide star, and we’re really looking forward to seeing her again.
We don’t want to say that the great minds at Disney have been struggling to come up with original ideas recently, but they’re certainly making a lot of live-action remakes of their classics at the moment. Not all of them have been well-received. The new ‘Lion King’ film delighted critics and movie-goers. Fans were less pleased by ‘Aladdin.’ You can’t please all of the people all of the time, but we think that the company has a hit on its hands with the forthcoming live-action version of ‘Mulan.’
Currently slated for a July 2020 release, this all-action version of ‘Mulan’ is as authentic as it could possibly be. It was largely shot in China, and almost every actor in it is Chinese. The trailers we’ve seen so far look stupendously good, and enough of the plot has been changed from the previous version of the film to make this new story unique. We suspect that Liu Yifei will become a Hollywood A-Lister off the back of her leading role in this film.
Bill & Ted Face The Music
There’s always an element of risk when actors and production studios return to classic roles after years away. As charming as some aspects of the most recent ‘Dumb and Dumber’ film were, the plot couldn’t mask the fact that Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels are a lot older than they were when they first played their parts, and some of the physical comedy felt awkward as a result. ‘Bill and Ted Face The Music’ is unlikely to suffer from the same problems.
Part of our confidence in making that statement comes from the fact that Keanu Reeves doesn’t seem to age like the rest of us do, but the increased age of the characters has been made central to the plot. This will be a middle-aged Bill and Ted forced to reluctantly confront their past, and it should offer a powerful nostalgic punch.
Wonder Woman 84
The age of superhero movies dominating release schedules might be drawing to a close, but it isn’t over yet – and that’s because of movies like ‘Wonder Woman.’ Gal Gadot’s first appearance in the role a few years ago drew rave reviews, and this 80s-themed movie looks set to build on that success and perhaps even push the franchise to a new level.
Having Patty Jenkins in the director’s chair again should mean that production standards stay as high as they were for the first film, and the setting should mean that the film has a killer soundtrack even in the unimaginable event that the story is somehow lacking. We’ll have to wait until August to find out if this stellar team has dropped the ball or not, but something tells us that we’ll all be very happy with what we get from them.
We apologize if we’ve left your favorite forthcoming film off our list – but movie preferences are all about opinions, and this is just our own! With so many great films coming, it looks like we’re in for a wonderful year of entertainment – so sit back, relax, and we’ll all bask in it together!
