Online Payment of Pending Traffic Challan

A traffic challan is a fine levied for the violation of traffic rules in India. These days, the traffic police issue a digital challan, or e-challan, in real-time after the traffic offense had been traced. This is an effective and convenient way to impose penalties.

In this article, we shall discuss how you can easily pay your pending traffic challan bills online through the Government of India’s Parivahan portal, your state’s Transport Authority’s website, or Paytm.

Payment of E-Challan via ‘Parivahan’

Paying your pending e-challan bill online is possible via the Parivahan portal. This is an integrated platform by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways. Here are the steps you can follow to check your e-challan status online on Parivahan and pay your dues:

  1. Visit the Parivahan portal at https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in/index/accused-challan.
  2. Enter one of the following details- challan number, driving license number, or vehicle number.
  3. Click on the ‘Get Detail’ button.
  4. Check your challan status and click on ‘Pay Now’ under the ‘Payment’ column.
  5. Choose your preferred online mode of payment to pay your pending e-challan.

That’s it! You will get a confirmation message on your registered mobile number after the payment is completed.

Pay E-Challan via the State Transport Website

Another easy way to pay your e-challan online is via the State Transport Authority’s website. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Visit your respective State Transport Authority website.
  2. Move to the section dedicated to the payment of traffic violation fines.
  3. You will be asked to fill in some details like vehicle registration number, driving license number, etc.
  4. Your traffic violation challans will be displayed on the screen.
  5. Choose the pending fine that you wish to pay.
  6. You will be redirected to the digital payment gateway where you can choose to pay online using your debit/credit card, net banking, UPI, etc.

Note: These steps may vary for different states.

Check Your E-Challan Status Online

If you wish to check your e-challan status online, here is all you need to do:

  1. Visit https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in/.
  2. Click on the ‘Check Challan Status’ tab.
  3. You will be redirected to a new page. Enter your driving license or vehicle registration number.
  4. Now, you can check all your e-challans in the given window along with the payment status.

Pay Your Traffic Challan Offline

It is not advised to have any pending challans for a long time. As we have seen above, paying your e-challan online is very convenient. However, if you wish to pay your pending challans offline, you can do it at any traffic police station in your state.

Wrapping up

There is no doubt about the fact that you must abide by the traffic rules as per the Motor Vehicle Act, 1988 while driving on Indian roads. This includes carrying your valid driving license, motor insurance documents, vehicle registration papers, etc. Violating any of these rules can lead to serious penalties, including the issuance of e-challans against you and/or imprisonment. And if a traffic challan is issued against you for any traffic offense, ensure that you pay it on time either online or offline.
