If you pose the question ‘which is the gambling capital of the world?’ to the average man on the street, the most common answer will most likely be ‘Las Vegas’. However, that answer would be wrong because Macau is by far the biggest gambling hub in the world and has been for a number of years.
There can be only one and its Macau
Macau is reported to have generated more than five times the gross gaming revenue (GGR) of Las Vegas and is home to some of the most expensive casino resorts in the world. The top casino operators in the world including Las Vegas Sands Corp, Wynn Resorts and MGM Resorts International have built multi-billion dollar casino resorts in the Macau peninsula.
Macau’s casinos offer visitors a wide range of gaming and non-gaming entertainment. Some of the best-ranked shows in the world take place at Macau’s casinos and are enjoyed on a daily basis by thousands of visitors from around the world, especially Mainland China.
Before we take a look at some of the top-rated shows in Macau, let us take a quick look at Macau and what makes this small peninsula so exciting!
What Makes Macau Special?
Macau which is located on the south coast of China was a Portuguese jurisdiction till 1999. The small peninsula is now part of the People’s Republic of China is about an hour away by ferry from Hong Kong and the port city of Guangzhou.
China does not allow any form of gambling on the Mainland and the only exception is Macau which is home to some of the best casinos in the world such as Venetian Macau, Wynn Palace, Parisian Macau, City of Dreams, Grand Lisboa and The Sands. There are six licensed operators in Macau and as many as 38 casinos spread across the small Peninsula.
The Cotai Strip is home to some of the biggest and best land-based casinos in Macau which operate on a 24/7 basis. The Chinese also love to gamble online even though online gambling is banned.
China’s block of online gambling seems odd considering the existence of Macau. The same can be said about the USA’s block of online gambling considering the existence of Vegas. However neither have succeeded in completely stopping hardcore gamblers from accessing the best Chinese no deposit sites.
Macau has a reputation for being a gambling paradise and is known to many as the Las Vegas of the East. The Macau Government decided in 2015 that it wanted to break away from their stereotype image of being known as the gambling capital of the east and wanted to transform its image into a more family-friendly tourist destination.
Macau Focuses On Non-Gaming Entertainment
The government of Macau sent out a notice to the six casino operators instructing them to focus on their non-gaming entertainment options in an effort to attract families and not just gamblers to their properties.
Prior to this government notice, Macau casino operators focused solely on gaming related activities as it brought in the highest revenue. However, casino operators obliged and developed a number of exciting non-gaming options which include some of the best-ranked shows in the world.
