I’ve had my share of corrupted video nightmares. A vacation clip that wouldn’t open. Wedding footage that froze mid-playback. So when I came across Stellar’s free online repair tool, I was skeptical but curious enough to give it a proper test.
Here’s what I found.
What it actually is
Stellar’s online video repair lets you repair corrupted video files straight from your browser — no download, no installation. You upload the damaged file, it does its thing, and you get a preview before committing to the download. That’s the pitch, anyway.
It handles the usual culprits: files corrupted from interrupted transfers, dodgy memory cards, camera errors, or those infuriating moments when your computer dies mid-recording.
Using it
I threw a few damaged MP4s at it. The interface is bare-bones in a good way — nothing to figure out, nothing to accidentally click wrong. Upload, wait, preview. For the minor corruption issues I tested, it worked. The repaired files played back cleanly.
The upload process is where patience comes in. Large files over a slow connection will test yours. That’s less a flaw in the tool and more just the reality of browser-based repair — you’re pushing data to a remote server, so your internet speed dictates your experience.
What I liked
No installation is genuinely convenient. I tested it across a couple of devices and it behaved consistently. For someone who only deals with a corrupted video once in a blue moon, this hits the right balance of accessible and functional. Also, from security and privacy angle it gives full confidence. Your uploaded file will be visible to you only and will be automatically deleted after 24 hours. Stellar Data Recovery Inc. is a big brand and it gives security and privacy confidence.
The free tier covers small files (upto 5GB), which is honestly where most casual users live anyway.

Where it falls short
This isn’t a tool for heavy lifting. Large files more than 5 GB, batch repairs — it’s not built for that.
The desktop version
I also spent time with Stellar Repair for Video Desktop, and the difference is significant. Everything processes locally, so large files aren’t a problem and there’s no waiting on uploads. It handles 4K, 6K, and 8K footage, supports batch repairs, and has an Advanced Repair mode that uses a healthy reference video from the same device to reconstruct badly damaged files — footage that the standard repair can’t touch.
For DSLR recordings, drone footage, or anything shot professionally, the desktop version is the one that actually earns its keep.
Bottom line
| Free Online Tool | Desktop Software | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | None | Required |
| Cost | Free | Trial available |
| Small file repairs | Works well | Works well |
| Large files | Limited | No problem |
| Advanced repair | No | Yes |
| Batch repair | No | Yes |
| Privacy | Moderate | Full control |
The free online tool is exactly what it says it is — a no-fuss option for simple and less than 5GB file repairs. It won’t solve every problem, but it doesn’t pretend to. If your needs are basic, start here.
If you’re a videographer, content creator, or someone sitting on irreplaceable footage that’s seriously damaged and more than 5GB size, skip straight to the desktop software.
