Sports have a unique way of creating real-time drama for their fans. Across a season, the wins, losses, rivalries, and star performances all mesh together to create a story for that year and set the stage for the next one. So, it’s not a surprise that K-Drama writers like to circle back to sports from time to time.

There are several hits already out there to enjoy from this genre. Twenty Five Twenty One, Run On, Fight for My Way, Bloodhounds, and Weightlifting Fairy are just the tip of the iceberg for top-tier sports K-Dramas. Now, with the World Cup set to command the attention of billions, two new sports dramas are getting some deserved hype.

Getting Going While Sports Take Center Stage

The World Cup is unavoidable just about anywhere in the world. In the Republic of Korea, soccer ranks as the most popular sport, and that’ll be fully realized this summer. The Korean national team finds itself in a rather open Group A, which the team led by Heung-min Son should escape with relative ease to reach the knockouts.

Of course, seeing this eruption of summer soccer fandom, many entertainment forms are looking to get in on the action. This is even the case with the selection of games at the live online casino UK players use. New and featured live games like Sports Arena, Sports Unlimited Blackjack, and Sports Roulette have landed to appease British fans looking to keep themselves immersed in the sport even when live games aren’t being played.

Gifted Earns Top-Tier Casting

Most likely to land first of a couple of new sports K-Dramas is Gifted. Created by tvN, the drama looks to have a kind of Moneyball-like tale, only that the protagonist goes down from pro coaching following an unfortunate accident. Using his skill to grade players’ abilities and utilize them accordingly, he transforms the bottom-ranked team.

As reported by GQ earlier in the year, the new drama will be headlined by Kim Woo Bin of Genie, Make a Wish global fame. He’s primed to play the role of the head coach, and will do so opposite Seo Eun Soo from Made in Korea. This will end up being the duo’s first on-screen team-up as they seek to bring to life the hit webtoon.

Boxing Takes Focus in Promoter

Next on the list is the new boxing K-Drama being called Promoter for the time being. It follows a boxing promoter in yet another tvN production as well as a light flyweight boxer looking to ascend in the professional ranks. He catches the eye of the promoter when starting as a pro, but he got there having been disqualified from several amateur competitions.

So, it’ll be up to the promoter to try to wrangle this wild talent to allow them to reach their potential within the laws of the sport. It’s based on the real story of Korea’s first female boxing promoter, Shim Young-ja, who’ll be played by Honey Lee. The central boxer will be played by Park Yoon-ho, having reportedly been passed on by Jang Dong-yoon and Park Ji-hoon.

It’s a huge sporting summer in 2026, setting the perfect scene for tvN to announce and then launch two titillating sports dramas of their own.
